Add 0.5" safety margin
A vacuum that barely fits can still get stuck on thick carpet or uneven floors. We recommend at least 0.5" (12mm) clearance above the vacuum height for reliable operation.
🔦
Dark spaces confuse sensors
Even if a vacuum fits physically, very dark or low spaces can confuse obstacle sensors and cause the robot to get trapped or repeatedly re-enter the same area.

Bed risers are a cheap fix
If your clearance is just short, bed risers (from £8–£25) can raise furniture 2–4 inches. Often cheaper than buying a slimmer vacuum model.

LiDAR towers add height
Many Roborock and Dreame models have retractable LiDAR towers that lower automatically to fit under furniture. The listed height already accounts for this on retractable models.
How much clearance does a robot vacuum need under a sofa?
Most standard robot vacuums are 3.3–3.8 inches (84–97mm) tall. You need at least 0.5 inches more than the vacuum's height to allow smooth entry and exit. So for a typical Roomba at 3.6", you need at least 4.1" of clearance. Slim models like the Roborock Saros series go as low as 3.1" (79mm).
Will a Roomba fit under my sofa?
The iRobot Roomba j7+ is 3.4 inches tall. The Roomba s9+ is 3.5 inches. Most modern Roombas need around 3.5–3.6 inches of clearance plus a small buffer. If your sofa has 4 inches or more of clearance, most Roomba models will fit.
What is the slimmest robot vacuum available in 2026?
The slimmest models in 2026 are the Roborock Saros series with retractable LiDAR (around 3.13"/79mm), the Dreame X60 Max Ultra (3.13"/79mm), and the Eufy X10 Pro Omni (3.35"/85mm). These are designed specifically for low-clearance furniture.
How do I measure the clearance under my furniture?
Use a rigid ruler or tape measure. Place it flat on the floor and measure vertically to the lowest point of the sofa frame or bed base — not the legs themselves. Check at several points as furniture frames can vary. The tightest measurement is the one that matters.
What can I do if my sofa clearance is too low?
Three options: (1) Use bed risers or furniture risers to increase clearance — these cost £8–£25 and add 2–4 inches. (2) Buy a slimmer robot vacuum (the Roborock Saros 10 at 3.13" is one of the slimmest). (3) Use virtual walls or no-go zones in the app to simply exclude that area from cleaning.
Do robot vacuums get stuck under furniture?
Yes — it's one of the most common complaints. Getting in is easier than getting out because the vacuum navigates forward but may struggle to reverse or turn in tight spaces. A safe minimum is clearance height = vacuum height + 0.5 inches.
